The Benefits of Assessing Fitness to Drive.

The question DriveABLE answers for most physicians and health professionals, is “Should my patient be driving?” and “How do I test them fairly and accurately?” A science-based driving evaluation is the answer. Our goal at DCAC is to support physicians and health professionals with fitness to drive decisions that determine the safety of medically and cognitively impaired drivers.

DriveABLE has become the global leader in driver risk assessment technology for the fair and accurate assessment of medically at-risk drivers with generalized cognitive impairment.

The assessment is comprised of two parts:

The DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment is a two-part process that uses cutting edge hardware and software, validated by decades of research and technology to identify at-risk drivers. The DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment Tool (DCAT Mobile) is the first step in the assessment protocol that uses cutting edge hardware and software to identify medically at-risk drivers. The DCAT system utilizes a tablet-based platform with touch-screen technology. The patient is not alone and there is opportunity for practice. The assessment presents 4 tasks that measure the cognitive processes needed for safe driving and predicts actual on-road performance. The DCAT is the most accurate cognitive assessment of predicting driving performance available.  Results are standardized, aged-normed providing objective accurate information about driver risk.

Up to a thirty minute break is provided at the completion of the DCAT Mobile and before the On-Road Evaluation.

The second step (usually on the same day) is the DriveABLE On-Road Evaluation (DORE). This is a specialized, functional on-road evaluation that measures the errors that cognitively impaired drivers make that are different, either in terms of the type of error or the frequency and severity, from those of healthy normal drivers. DORE provides an opportunity to demonstrate real-world driving ability. An evaluator vehicle with passenger side dual controls (brake and gas) is provided. The driver is accompanied through the road course.

Both the DCAT Mobile Score and DORE Score provide an overall composite score of driver risk. Results are in color and provide crucial information you need to guide your decision making.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Both assessments are age-normed, standardized and demonstrated to be equally fair for urban and rural drivers. Assessment results are sent to the client’s physician and nominated person. We follow HIPPA and your patient will need to nominate in writing who is authorized to receive a copy of the assessment results.

Each portion of the assessment typically takes less than one hour to administer by a DriveABLE Certified Assessor or DriveABLE Certified Driving Evaluator.

DriveABLE seeks to protect safe drivers, accurately identify cognitively unsafe drivers and improve safety on our roads.

As an arm’s length assessment, DriveABLE allows you to focus on the outcome of the assessment and remain an advocate for your patient while managing your litigation risk and protecting public safety.

Consideration of your patient’s other information, including the Driveable Score Results (DCAT Mobile and DORE results), family report, driving history, visual and physical deficits, episodic medical conditions and compliance to medications should be reviewed when making decisions regarding overall driving competence.

Please note both the In-Office assessment (DCAT Mobile) and On-Road Evaluation (DORE) is a private, fee-for-service (FFS). Your patient is responsible for the fee. Payment is appreciated at the time of scheduling.

We look forward to being of service.
