WHAT TO EXPECT

Compassion. Support. Respect.

At the DCAC, we aim to create a comfortable and supportive environment in the privacy of our offices. Our dedicated team of DriveABLE Certified Assessors and DriveABLE Certified Driving Evaluators facilitate the scientifically-based and research-proven DriveABLE assessment process. We strictly adhere to HIPAA protocols to ensure the confidentiality of all client information.

To initiate the assessment, our office will reach out to you (the driver) or the nominated contact person to schedule the appointment. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive "Welcome to DCAC" packet to our client (driver), which contains detailed information about what they can expect during the upcoming assessment. This packet also includes the necessary paperwork that needs to be completed beforehand. We understand having a driver assessment can be stressful and encourage all forms and payment to be completed prior to your arrival at our office.

The driver (client) is responsible for nominating who else may receive a copy of the assessment results.

Within three business days of completing both parts of the assessment, we promptly send the results to the referring physician, occupational therapist, or other qualified health professional. Simultaneously, we ensure that the client (driver) and their designated family member receive the results as well. We will discuss the results with you and provide any relevant feedback. We strongly recommend to our clients schedule an appointment with their referring physician to discuss the results and seek further guidance.

For most drivers, the transition from the driver's seat to the passenger seat marks a significant milestone in life. However, it doesn't have to signal the end of your independence. Our team is here to offer support to both the retiring driver and their family during this time of change. Whether it's a temporary situation due to medical issues or a permanent farewell to driving, our primary aim is to help these individuals maintain their independent lifestyle by connecting them with alternative transportation programs and resources. As part of our service, we provide this assistance as a complimentary offering. We are here to support and provide guidance to ensure a stress-free and smooth transition into the passenger role, enabling you to move forward with your mobility and lifestyle choices.

The assessment process

At DCAC, DriveABLE Certified Assessors and DriveABLE Certified Driving Evaluators engage the driver in a two-part process. First, through an in-office computerized cognitive assessment known as the DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment Tool (DCAT Mobile). Utilizing touch screen technology presented through engaging game-like tasks that are designed to specifically test the interaction of the cognitive abilities essential to drive safely. Test results from the DCAT Mobile are standardized, age-normed, and demonstrated to be equally fair for urban and rural drivers. After the DCAT Mobile is completed, drivers will have a rest break for up to thirty minutes before proceeding to the next part of the driver assessment.

The second part of the process is a specialized functional on-road driving evaluation known as DORE. A dual-control (brake and gas) company vehicle is provided and the driver is accompanied by a DriveABLE Certified Driving Evaluator. Drivers will have an opportunity to demonstrate their driving abilities. Client performance is measured in real-time under real conditions. DORE tests specifically for decline in the cognitive skills needed for safe driving.
